James Collins
Homes and Gardens

October 18 - December 13, 2025

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 18, 5-9 pm

Matéria in Spaces is pleased to present James Collins' site-responsive installation Homes and Gardens, including eight new large-scale paintings, and ten new smaller works.

In Homes and Gardens, Collins reimagines the domestic interior as a shifting field of orientation. His new abstract paintings respond to the rhythms of the house, transforming the familiar into a space both intimate and expansive—a home recast as a site of reflection and encounter.

Site-responsive and evolving from the physical contours of the space itself, the works invite visitors to inhabit an environment where the private folds into the public.

The project takes place at Biba Bell and Chad Proudlock's home/loft downtown Grosse Pointe Park, a unique space that includes an addition by architect Karen Swanson, the great granddaughter of Eliel Saarinen.

The public opening reception with the artist will take place on Saturday, October 18, from 5-9 pm, and viewings will be available by gallery appointment afterwards. Additional events associated with the project will also place from October through December 2025.

Biba Bell and Chad Proudlock's home is located at 15114 Kercheval Avenue, Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.
